According to Wikipedia this delicious fruit is a grapevine species and native to the southeastern part of the United States. It has been extensively cultivated since the 16th Century both as a fruit to be eaten and for making jelly, preserves and wine.
Muscadine grapes are rich sources of polyphenols and other nutrients studied for their potential health benefits. A Mississippi State University nutritionist reported that a puree of muscadine skins and pulp is an excellent source of dietary fiber, essential minerals and carbohydrates and is low in fat.
